EC allocates over ?7M to reduce disaster aftermath in Central Asia

European Commission allocates more than ?7 million to reduce the impact of natural disasters in Central Asia. “The funds will help vulnerable categories of the population to prepare for disasters and protect themselves. It is vital to raise awareness about climate change. Europe is trying to assist the most vulnerable countries,” the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Karel de Gucht said.

Since 2003 Central Asia became the target region, which provides financial assistance in disasters’ prevention and risk reduction. As to EC reports, funding will be continued for disaster management at community level and coordination mechanisms at local, national and regional levels. It will also provide for rising of public awareness and education, early warning systems, the exchange of know-how experience and neutralization of impact on the environment.

It is expected that projects will be implemented at two levels, either at the regional - five countries of Central Asia, or in one of the specific countries and regions, mainly in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
