Centerra should carry out a normal recultivation of Kumtor," the head of the laboratory of the Institute of Rock Mechanics and Mineral Resources Development Isakbek Torgoev said today during the parliamentary hearings on the impact of the mine activities on glaciers.
According to him, Centerra is the largest company, which caused damage to glaciers around the world. Being aware of this, Kyrgyzstan has to make every effort to ensure proper reclamation of gold deposit after the end of its development. At present, detailed recultivation program is not presented.
Recultivation will prevent the gradual shifting of the ice and rock mass. Development of the mine results in a large amount of wastes - about two billion tons. Reclamation is also needed to prevent the loss of tailings, that is possible because of Petrov lake breakthrough," Isakbek Torgoev said.
