One in five received asylum in Latvia in 2009 - Kyrgyz

One out of five persons received asylum in Latvia in 2009 is a former Kyrgyz citizen, Delfi reported with a reference to the Kyrgyz Citizenship and Migration department.

According to the department, only 5 asylum seekers among 52 citizens from other countries received official status of a refugee in Latvia in 2009, while 6 claimants received an alternative status.

As reported, most of all asylum claimants came from Afghanistan – 6 adults and 12 children. Second place takes Uzbekistan – 11 people. For the other countries like Iran, Russia and Syria this number makes 3. According to the official information, citizens of the following countries also were seeking asylum in Latvia: Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Georgia, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Eritrea and Belarus. The only citizens who received an official asylum status were citizens of Russia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan.
