“In Kyrgyzstan, more funds are allocated for meals of convicted, than for a child in orphanage,” Lidiya Olimpiyeva, head of the Social and Economic Work and Wages Department of the Central Committee of the Kyrgyz Education and Science Employees Union, stated at today’s panel discussion on the results of the second monitoring of living conditions of older persons in custody.

According to her, in correctional institutions it is necessary to create conditions so that every convict to work and feed himself. “We should eliminate dependency. Let every convicted person earn money for his detention,” Lidiya Olimpiyeva said.

She noted that elderly convicts, especially women, are not made work. Younger people are involved in the production. “From 4 correctional institutions monitored labor activity is only in female colony No.2 in Stepnoe village. 16 elderly women work there. Their wages depend on output. The average monthly salary of convicted is from 250 to 1,200 thousand soms depending on the type of work,” Lidiya Olimpiyeva added.
