The main works at Kumtor will move to Sary-Tor glacier in the nearest future. It is included into a plan on production development at the mine.
It is planned to create deep pits, adjacent to the current Sary-Tor front in glacier valley. Most likely, the works will be associated with a direct extraction and removal of ice from its stream. Pre-development of Sary-Tor pit will begin in 2018 and production will be completed by 2023.
"The plan of mine development and exploitation involves placing of waste rock in dumps, located in the valleys of Davydov, Sary-Tor and Lysyi glaciers. The new dumps will be located in the permafrost rocks zone with a high content of ground ice. In the future, this may lead to rheological deformation of soils and formation of artificial rock glaciers, such as those that exist in the valleys of Lysiy and Davydov glaciers," the report of the expert group on the state of the glaciers near Kumtor gold deposit states.
