Deputies criticized the report of the experts on the state of glaciers around the Kumtor, the Deputy Mirlan Bakirov said today during the parliamentary hearings.
According to him, Davydov glacier almost disappeared because of the gold production at Kumtor. The deputy accused the expert commission of one-sided approach to the problem of melting glaciers. Earlier, the same accusations were made by the deputy Rada Tumanbaeva.
"It seems that you have made a report in favor of Centerra. Davydov and Lysyi glaciers are melting due to anthropogenic impacts. We must talk about it directly. The reports must comply with reality. We can see the condition of glaciers around Bishkek and Kumtor," Mirlan Bakirov protested.
Representatives of the expert group noted that they don't deny the man-made influence of Kumtor development on the glaciers. However, this effect is less than the natural factor. In this case, the commission noted that Davydov and Lysyi glaciers won't be able to return to its original state. Now we have to think about avoiding the negative impact of the development of Kumtor on other glaciers. For example, we should raise the issue of underground gold mining in the area of Sary-Tor glacier, to which major works will be moved soon.
The expert commission found no connection between the melting of glaciers and works at Kumtor. The main reason, according to them, is global warming.
