About 60% of Kyrgyz prisoners condemned for grave, especially grave crimes

Out of 10 thousand prisoners in Kyrgyzstan about 60% are condemned for grave or especially grave crimes, Batyr Saparbaev, chief of the Kyrgyz Punishment Execution Department told reporters Thursday.

“Grave and especially grave criminals are usually sentenced to more than 10 years, while over 200 criminals are prisoner for live. We decided to build a separate jail for “lifers”, since they affect other inmates. However, the department lacks funds to fulfill the project,” he said.

Humanization of the Kyrgyz penal system significantly reduced number of prisoners. “We believe that we should apply more permissive measures for minor crimes, such as theft,” Saparbaev said.
