Kyrgyzstan sentences 17 defendants to life imprisonment for mass riots in S. Kyrgyzstan

Suzak district court sentenced 17 defendants to life imprisonment for participation in mass rioting and killing 16 people in Suzak district, the southern Kyrgyzstan.

Note of 24.kg news agency: According to the investigation, on June12-13, local residents of Suzak district blocked the road Osh-Bishkek at the pass Topurak-Bel, spilled the oil and stopped the cars. As a result of riots 16 people were killed and 9 cars were set afire. The two residents of Suzak district still reported missing.

19 people are charged with murder, enticement of interethnic hatred and organizing mass riots.

On November 23, 2010, the court read the verdict – all the 19 defendants were found guilty in commission of the crime. The 17 defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment. Another two – to 25 years in prison.

The lawyers of the accused have already stated that they will challenge the verdict of the court in higher authorities and demand to set aside the trial verdict.
