The Kyrgyz government has asked deputies of the Parliament not to consider the issue of additional shares in Centerra Gold Inc. not to influence the negotiation process. It became known today at a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Fuel, Energy Complex and Subsoil Use.
As the head of the committee Kozhobek Ryspaev (SDPK) said, the request to postpone the consideration of the issue was personally voiced by the Prime Minister Temir Sariev. "In addition, a telephone message was sent to the Speaker of the Parliament Asylbek Jeenbekov," the MP said, saying that it was about a two-week period, i.e. the Cabinet speaks for its discussion after March 15, 2016.
Before making a decision Kozhobek Ryspaev recalled that this issue was initiated by the Committee for a reason. "If you remember, it was a protocol order of the chamber, our colleague Bakyt Torobaev raised the issue on the election of representatives of the Kyrgyz side in Centerra Gold Inc. But the government fears that the discussion of this issue could have a negative impact on our negotiations," head of the committee said.
At the same time, the deputy Ekmat Baybakpaev (Respublika - Ata Jurt) said that it was necessary to ask the government about the elections of members of the Board of Directors of the Kyrgyz side to Centerra Gold Inc., which requirements were presented to them. "Two previous representatives, who allowed issue of additional shares, have left their posts and have not suffered any responsibility," the MP reminded, proposing to introduce a rule on appointment of members of the Board of Directors in the company by their committee.
However Kozhobek Ryspaev reminded that the committee does not have this right by the law. "But we can supervise and check whether the worthy people were elected, whether the law is executed or not," he added.
As a result, the committee, taking into account the Government's request, decided to discuss the issue after March 15, and consider not only the fact of issue of additional shares in Centerra Gold Inc but the criteria for selecting the members of the Board of Directors by Kyrgyzaltyn JSC as well as the overall situation on Kumtor project.
