Every third Kyrgyzstani suffers from iodine deficiency

05/11-2009 09:07, Bishkek – News Agency “24.kg”, By Aizada KUTUEVA

According to experts, every third person suffers from iodine deficiency in Kyrgyzstan, Dinara Moldosheva, member of Kyrgyz parliament said Thursday at the parliamentary session.

“Iodine deficiency can have such grave consequences as mental retardation, stillbirth, endemic goiter, cretinism and other horrible diseases,” Moldosheva said.

Kyrgyzstan lies in iodine deficiency area. “Due to the fact all the salt is imported from foreign countries. The analysis has shown that only two out of 18 salt brands contain potassium iodate. I suggest the government buying iodate and controlling its contents in salt. The problem could lead to deplorable consequences if not to control it today,” the deputy added.
