At least 2,544 thousand HIV-positives registered in Kyrgyzstan in September 2009

At least 2,544 thousand HIV-positives were registered in the republic as of September 1, 2009, whereof 2,396 thousand are Kyrgyz citizens, the Republican AIDS Association reported.

About 25.8 percent of the patients are residents of Chui region, 24.7 percent - of Osh city, 20.2 percent - Osh region, 14.4 percent – of Bishkek, 11.2 percent – of Jalalabad region, 1.7 percent- of Batken region, 1.3 percent – of Issyk-Kul region, 0.5 percent - of Talas region and 0.2 percent of them are residents of Naryn region.

Ways of the infection’s transmission are the following: 66.7 percent of the positives got the virus through injection drug use, 25 percent-through sexual intercourse, 2.1 percent caught HIV as a baby of infected mother, 6.1 percent got the virus at hospital and 0.08 percent of the patients do not know the way they got the virus.

The largest number of HIV-positives is 20-39 year-olds, which is 72.5 percent of all registered cases.
