People in isolated psychiatric hospitals do not die from mental illnesses but from tuberculosis, cardiovascular and other diseases. Expert on Health Care Organization Burul Makenbaeva announced today at a press conference in 24.kg news agency.
According to her, now the Ministry of Health Care is working on a National Programme for Mental Health Protection for 2017-2030 years.
"Mental health must be understood more broadly: it is psychological, physical, social and legal welfare. One hospital in Chym-Korgon is not enough now. On the contrary, Chym-Korgon is old model, when one wanted to isolate all the people with mental health problems," she said.
According to WHO, by 2025, the burden of mental illness will exceed the burden of the most common cardiovascular diseases now.
"In these isolated hospitals people do not have access to other types of aid. Therefore, care should be integrated, it will be moved to the primary health care level. And this is the closest to the people level: family physicians groups, family medicine centers, territorial hospitals. Mental health protection should be integrated into the help to the children and families in difficult situations, into the work of juvenile inspections at schools. Everyone should know what the mental health is. At present, dramatic situation is that neither teachers nor social workers have the understanding of mental disorders, which are actually very common," Burul Makenbaeva stressed.
